Aerial Work Platforms: Surface Leveling

Operator Warnings and Instructions:

  1. The guardrail system provides fall protection for most scissor lifts. (can vary by size of lift)
  2. Fall protection is required for aerial boom lifts.
  3. Do not exceed rated slope or grade.
  4. Use stabilizers as recommended.
  5. Guardrails shall be closed.
  6. Load must distributed evenly.
  7. Maintain overhead clearance.
  8. Maintain MSAD.
  9. Wear appropriate PPE.
  10. Maintain firm footing on floor.
  11. Watch out for moving equipment.
  12. Report problems immediately.
  13. Report hazards immediately.
  14. Use correct equipment class for hazardous areas.
  15. Watch for cord entanglement.
  16. Do not exceed capacity.
  17. Make sure persons on ground are clear before lowering.
  18. Engine must be shut off  prior to refueling.
  19. Charge batteries in a well ventilated area.
  20. Do not position against another object for stability.
  21. Do not use as a crane.
  22. Do not operate from elevated surfaces.
  23. Limit speed to the workplace conditions.
  24. Drive elevated only when:
    • Clear view of travel surface
    • Workers aware of travel
    • Maintain safe distance from floor obstacles
    • Maintain safe distance from overhead obstacles
  25. No stunt driving.
  26. Secure lift when not in use.
  27. Do not alter safety devices.
  28. Remove all persons prior to attempting to free snagged unit.
  29. Use three point contact when entering or vacating.
  30. No modifications without mfg permission.
  31. Cease operation and consult with supervisor for unsafe conditions.
  32. Report problems with lift prior to operating it.
  33. Do not carry materials larger than the platform.
  34. Do not exceed rated horizontal force capacity.
  35. Take steps to prevent contact with overhead bridge cranes.
  36. Machine must be adequately supported.
  37. Must be leveled prior to use.
  38. Protect against unauthorized use.


Training and Qualification:

  • Users shall ensure the operator is trained and familiarized on the equipment.
  • Only qualified persons shall operate.
  • Training must consist of classroom (ANSI A92.6 and/or A92.5) and practical instruction & evaluation.
  • Shall have read and understood the manufacturer’s operators manual.
  • Records or proof of training shall be retained by the operator and employer.

Different Model Familiarization:

  • Must be trained on a model with similar type controls
  • Must be trained on location of operators manual, all control functions and all safety devices.
  • Shall be documented in writing

Responsibilities of Operators: (Key points)

  1. Proper use of operators manual.
  2. Pre-start inspection.
  3. Understanding factors effecting stability.
  4. Workplace inspection.
  5. Practical operating proficiency.


Pre-start Inspection: (Key points)

  1. Operating and emergency controls.
  2. Safety devices.
  3. Check hydraulic and fuel systems.
  4. Tires, wheels, placards, control markings, operators manual, guardrail system.
  5. Full function test (lower and upper).


Workplace Inspection:

  1. Surface conditions
  2. Obstructions & electrical hazards
  3. Pedestrian traffic
  4. Inadequate surfaces
  5. Wind and weather
  6. Placing cones and/or barricades.


Prior to each elevation:

  1. Outriggers or stabilizers are fully deployed and used.
  2. Guardrails are functional and closed.
  3. Load is evenly distributed.
  4. Appropriate PPE gear for the work and environment.
  5. Double check for hazards.
