Aerial Work Platforms: Surface Leveling
Operator Warnings and Instructions:
- The guardrail system provides fall protection for most scissor lifts. (can vary by size of lift)
- Fall protection is required for aerial boom lifts.
- Do not exceed rated slope or grade.
- Use stabilizers as recommended.
- Guardrails shall be closed.
- Load must distributed evenly.
- Maintain overhead clearance.
- Maintain MSAD.
- Wear appropriate PPE.
- Maintain firm footing on floor.
- Watch out for moving equipment.
- Report problems immediately.
- Report hazards immediately.
- Use correct equipment class for hazardous areas.
- Watch for cord entanglement.
- Do not exceed capacity.
- Make sure persons on ground are clear before lowering.
- Engine must be shut off prior to refueling.
- Charge batteries in a well ventilated area.
- Do not position against another object for stability.
- Do not use as a crane.
- Do not operate from elevated surfaces.
- Limit speed to the workplace conditions.
- Drive elevated only when:
- Clear view of travel surface
- Workers aware of travel
- Maintain safe distance from floor obstacles
- Maintain safe distance from overhead obstacles
- No stunt driving.
- Secure lift when not in use.
- Do not alter safety devices.
- Remove all persons prior to attempting to free snagged unit.
- Use three point contact when entering or vacating.
- No modifications without mfg permission.
- Cease operation and consult with supervisor for unsafe conditions.
- Report problems with lift prior to operating it.
- Do not carry materials larger than the platform.
- Do not exceed rated horizontal force capacity.
- Take steps to prevent contact with overhead bridge cranes.
- Machine must be adequately supported.
- Must be leveled prior to use.
- Protect against unauthorized use.
Training and Qualification:
- Users shall ensure the operator is trained and familiarized on the equipment.
- Only qualified persons shall operate.
- Training must consist of classroom (ANSI A92.6 and/or A92.5) and practical instruction & evaluation.
- Shall have read and understood the manufacturer’s operators manual.
- Records or proof of training shall be retained by the operator and employer.
Different Model Familiarization:
- Must be trained on a model with similar type controls
- Must be trained on location of operators manual, all control functions and all safety devices.
- Shall be documented in writing

- Proper use of operators manual.
- Pre-start inspection.
- Understanding factors effecting stability.
- Workplace inspection.
- Practical operating proficiency.
Pre-start Inspection: (Key points)
- Operating and emergency controls.
- Safety devices.
- Check hydraulic and fuel systems.
- Tires, wheels, placards, control markings, operators manual, guardrail system.
- Full function test (lower and upper).
Workplace Inspection:
- Surface conditions
- Obstructions & electrical hazards
- Pedestrian traffic
- Inadequate surfaces
- Wind and weather
- Placing cones and/or barricades.
Prior to each elevation:
- Outriggers or stabilizers are fully deployed and used.
- Guardrails are functional and closed.
- Load is evenly distributed.
- Appropriate PPE gear for the work and environment.
- Double check for hazards.
